McDonald's Commercial

This week a few different commercials stuck out at me. One in particular has been driving me crazy all week so I think that this gives me the perfect excuse to talk about it! McDonald’s has been airing a commercial supporting the Olympics in which they compare an Olympic champion biting on their medal to celebrate their victory with average Americans biting on chicken McNuggets to symbolize our country’s victories. This is the absolute most ridiculous commercial I have seen in quite a long time! These people are champions, who works effortlessly all year round to prepare for this world-wide competition; people who sweat, break bones, and sustain serious injuries, all to push themselves to be the best they can possibly be. Please tell me how this is in any way, shape, or form like some lazy person driving down to the McDonald’s Drive Thru to order a twenty piece order of McNuggets? I understand that they were comparing the two because of the “color” that the chicken nuggets are, but really? I think it’s insulting to our Olympian athletes to compare a gold medal to a chicken nugget. (Sorry but this has been severely bothering me all week.) This commercial really didn’t make any sense to me, which is why it’s really stuck in my head & it’s been the topic for a few different rants. I paid more attention to this advertisement because I think that it really degrades what it means to win an Olympic medal. I think that this is one form of how perceptions vary throughout our society. I thought the McDonalds Olympic commercial was enraging. Others may have thought of it as a good way to celebrate our Olympic champions in a way similar to theirs after a win. Others may ignore the commercial entirely. This commercial was McDonald’s attempting to create their own “Olympic symbol,” which is subject to different people’s perceptions of what an acceptable symbol is. I didn’t find it to be an acceptable symbol; however someone else might believe that this symbol is a great idea. I think that our varying perspectives really do impact what we take away from different situations & this was a great example of that in my mind.
